Canadian commercial seal kill begins off the East coast of Canada
23 March 2009
Despite freezing fog and driving snow observers made it to the ice to witness
the carnage. Mark Glover, Respect for Animals’ campaign director was
one of the small team of people who made it out to witness the killing. “The
ice was covered in blood and the skins of those poor baby seals were heaped
up. Only weeks ago I was on the ice with the newborn seals, being back
here and seeing them like this is heartbreaking.”
The blood and carcasses were visible from hundreds of feet up in the air, a stain
on the pristine ice and on Canada’s conscience.
The European Parliament will vote in just a few weeks on a proposal to ban the
trade in seal products in the European Union, potentially removing one of the
most important markets for Canadian seal products. Russia recently announced
a ban on the slaughter of seals younger than 1 year old, citing public support
for ending the killing.
The hunt will continue over the next few days in the Gulf of St Lawrence before
moving into the area known as the Front , north of Newfoundland.
Respect for Animals as part of the team from Humane Society of the United States
and Humane Society International will remain in the Gulf of St Lawrence and continue
to document the killing.
